Zurich/Munich, January XX 2026 – Hyperscale Power, the company building hyper-efficient and cost-effective compact SSTs for data centres, EV charging and large-scale renewable projects, has raised a €5 million seed round co-led by World Fund and Vsquared Ventures.
Founded in Zurich in 2025 by Daniel Rothmund and Sami Pettersson, who each wield over a decade of experience working with SSTs and medium-voltage high-power converters, Hyperscale Power has developed a breakthrough proprietary SST design.
Hyperscale Power is tapping a fast-growing multi-billion dollar market driven by tech and AI giants doubling down on data centre investments, and governments looking to fully transition to renewable energy. To meet this demand, Hyperscale Power is moving quickly toward commercial release, with R&D remaining in Switzerland and production expected to scale in another European location.
AI compute, electrification, and EV fast-charging are straining a transformer supply chain that hasn’t evolved in decades, pushing lead times to 18-24+ months. Meanwhile, modern loads are increasingly high-density - far exceeding what passive 50/60 Hz transformers can support.
This mismatch is creating an infrastructure bottleneck that will only continue to widen, especially as hyperscalers plan to deploy more than two trillion dollars into AI factory build-outs by 2030.
Breakthroughs in wide-bandgap semiconductors, driven by automotive-scale production, have finally made medium-voltage solid-state transformers efficient and affordable.
This tech maturity comes just as data centres and high-power charging operators hit the space, efficiency, and lead-time limits of legacy transformer-rectifier systems, creating a clear opening for compact, high-density solid-state transformers.
Hyperscale Power’s SST delivers that step change: it is roughly 10× smaller, and uses ~90% less material. The result is shorter time-to-power, lower opex, lower emissions, and a platform ideally suited for EV charging, solar power conversion, and the rapidly growing power demands of GPU-driven AI infrastructure.
Its technical differentiations - including operating at extremely high frequency - give Hyperscale Power’s SST an energy-conversion efficiency of up to 98.5% – approximately 2% higher than state-of-the-art products. Data centres consume so much energy that this 2% improvement in energy efficiency represents millions of tonnes of potential CO₂ savings when deployed at scale.
Daniel Rothmund, Hyperscale Power’s co-founder, said: “Our mission is to rethink how power is delivered to the systems driving the next industrial revolution. Data centres, EV chargers, and large-scale renewable projects all face the same bottleneck: efficiently and safely converting massive amounts of electricity. Our solid-state transformers provide a smaller, lighter, and cleaner alternative that can reduce material use and emissions. The power demand of new GPU models is increasing exponentially, creating a mismatch with traditional power systems. Server racks are becoming significantly denser, and our technology provides the ideal solution.”
Data from the Energy Research Institute of NTU also indicates that SSTs can help reduce electricity grid losses by around 25% by enabling higher renewable-integration capacity and modular grid upgrades, and by offering customers the chance to cut embodied emissions.
Daria Saharova, Managing Partner at World Fund: "Electrification and compute needs are scaling faster than the power infrastructure beneath them. Data centres alone are driving multi-gigawatt power needs, and grid losses waste around 6–8% of all electricity generated globally. A 2% efficiency gain at this scale translates into millions of tonnes of CO₂ avoided. We’re thrilled to back Daniel and Sami as they tackle this bottleneck head-on, with solid-state transformers built for the realities of modern loads.”
Jakob Lingg, Investment Manager at Vsquared Ventures: “We’re at a real inflexion point in power infrastructure, with electrification surging across every sector. Breakthroughs in semiconductors, high-frequency power electronics, and digital control are converging to define a new era of solid-state transformers, ready to meet soaring power needs. With Sami and Daniel’s medium-voltage SST expertise and a sharp entrepreneurial approach, Hyperscale Power has the right team and technology to seize this market at exactly the right moment.”
The Hyperscale Power team will use the new funding to establish a lab and office space, grow the team, focus on hiring senior technical specialists, and accelerate prototype development. Their roots in Switzerland’s precision-engineering ecosystem and their proximity to ETH Zürich ensure long-term access to Europe’s top technical talent.
