HYPERSCALE POWER IS BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ELECTRIC POWER INFRASTRUCTURE.

The Zurich-based deeptech company is developing compact solid-state transformers (SSTs) designed for the power demands of AI data centres, EV charging, and large-scale renewable energy systems. Hyperscale Power’s proprietary design is roughly 10× smaller than conventional transformers and uses around 90% less material, dramatically reducing deployment timelines from years to weeks. By leveraging high-frequency operation and advanced power electronics, the system achieves energy-conversion efficiencies of up to 98.5% – significantly higher than today’s solutions. With a clear efficiency, cost, and emissions advantage, Hyperscale Power is positioned to unlock faster electrification and power delivery for the infrastructure underpinning the next industrial era.

Why we invested in Hyperscale Power

The climate case: Electricity systems lose around 6–8% of generated power globally through transmission and conversion inefficiencies. At the same time, the rapid growth of AI compute, EV charging networks, and renewable power generation is dramatically increasing electricity demand. Hyperscale Power’s solid-state transformers offer up to 98.5% energy-conversion efficiency and enable more flexible, modular grid architectures that can integrate renewables more effectively. Even a 2% improvement in efficiency at hyperscale data-centre and grid level translates into millions of tonnes of avoided CO₂ emissions. The company’s compact design also reduces material usage by roughly 90%, lowering embodied emissions and supporting a more resource-efficient power infrastructure.

The business case: Hyperscale Power is entering a rapidly expanding multi-billion-euro market driven by hyperscalers, electrification, and global investment in energy infrastructure. Transformer supply chains are currently strained, with lead times stretching to 18–24 months as demand for high-power systems accelerates. Hyperscale Power’s SST technology dramatically shortens deployment timelines while delivering higher efficiency and power density. This creates a compelling value proposition for data centres, EV charging networks, and renewable-energy operators that need faster, more efficient power conversion to meet growing electricity demands.

The team: Hyperscale Power was founded in 2025 by Daniel Rothmund and Sami Pettersson, who each bring more than a decade of experience in solid-state transformers and medium-voltage high-power converters. Their deep technical expertise in power electronics and transformer architecture underpins the company’s proprietary design. Based in Zurich, the team benefits from close ties to Europe’s leading engineering ecosystem around ETH Zürich, positioning the company to attract top technical talent and rapidly bring its technology to market.
